The Stern Family

 

In the midst of the 19th century the young cloth merchant Emanuel Stern, born on February 26, 1836 in Willmars, moved to Hammelburg. He married Clara Nussbaum. She was the youngest daughter of Samuel Nussbaum. Samuel was the first son of Manes Nussbaum. Samuel´s mother Marianne came from Willmars.

 

On November 29, 1859

Emanuel Stern (* 1836 in Willmars) married Clara Nussbaum (* 1836 in Hammelburg).

The house on the right hand (Hotel Stadtcafé)

was the former house of Emanuel Stern and his wife Clara Nussbaum.

Old Number 228 - Marktplatz 8 in Hammelburg

It was the house of the Stern family from 1859 to 1938.

Max Stern, born January 27, 1863

Nathan Stern, born October 25, 1864

Siegfried Stern, born July 1, 1866

Meda Stern, born January 6, 1869

Selmar Stern, born July 18, 1870

was married to Emanuel Stern.

Nathan Stern, born in 1864, son of Emanuel,

was married to Rosa Sichel, daughter of Samuel Sichel.

Nathan took over the house and business of his father Emanuel Stern

at Marktplatz 8 in Hammelburg.

Nathan passed away on January 7, 1928 at the age of 63.

 

His wife and widow Rosa Stern

took over the business together with her second born daughter

Bettina and her son-in-law Julius Mantel.

 

 

Bettina Stern (* 1901) married the merchant Julius Mantel in 1928.

He was born in Mellrichstadt.

In 1935 Julius Mantel chaired the Jewish Community of Hammelburg.

In November 1938 he was arrested and deported

to the concentration camp of Dachau.

 

 

 

On November 10, 1938

terrible things happened in the house of Rosa Stern.

In the early morning men of the SA rushed into the house and

destroyed the whole furniture, all windows and doors.

 

- It was the terrible pogrom day in Hammelburg. -

In 1939 the Stern Family

was expelled by the Nazis from her hometown.

 

Bettina and Julius Mantel left Hammelburg on January 13,1939.

Rosa Stern and her first born daughter Frieda Neuberger

went away on January 28, 1939.

Victims of Holocaust - The Stern Famliy  - Hammelburg

 

The two young sons of Frieda

-  Norbert Neuberger and Ernst Stefan Neuberger -

remained in Germany with her grandmother Rosa Stern.

The two boys visited a Jewish school and boarding home in Fürth.

Together with her grandmother

they were deported on May 1942 to Belzec and Sobibor.

Their father - Heinz Neuberger - was murdered

in 1937 by the Gestapo Mannheim.
